After sex, sperm up to 3-5 days in the female body (the egg only lives for 6-12 hours, occasionally up to 24, so you have to have sex *before* ovulation in general). It then takes about a week for the fertilized egg to get to the uterus to start implanting. Until implantation, the egg is not attached to your body in any way, so it can't cause any physical signs of pregnancy (including producing HCG--the hormone tested for in pregnancy tests). It then takes at *least* 2 days for the hormone levels to reach high enough levels to be detected. Most home pregnancy tests aren't 95% accurate (according to unbiased testing) for 2 *weeks* after fertilization.
So, if you have sex right at the time of ovulation and use the most accurate pregnancy test, you can get accurate results as early as 8 days after sex. But it may take up to 3 1/2 weeks to be really certain.

I suggest waiting until after you've missed your period (and just treat yourself right in the meantime) so that you have the best chance of seeing a positive if you do conceive. Many tests say they can detect earlier, but the chance of getting a false negative increases because you might not have built up enough hormone in your body to be detected by urine testing.

It depends on the test. There are some that say they work 6 days past implantation. Usually you can get a positive up to 5 days before your period.

depends on the brand of test you take. the most accurate is after a missed period. but i know there is one out there that you can test 5 days before your missed period, i just cant think of the brand right now. good luck.
