Because it got me thinking, when I go on holiday for two weeks my car sounds funny when I first drive it, so I stop for a moment and then its ok, but when its being shiped, it can be up to six weeks before the engine is started again, am worried about any damage - I can't aford another car - its cheaper to take mine.

if you have to drain your engine before shipping that's OK....drain it, fill it with Magnetec oil from Castrol, it clings to metal like a magnet. Run it for a few miles then drain it ready for shipping, a very thin coat will remain on the engine parts but not enough to drip, this will protect the engine until you fill it again.

If your car is leaking oil might it be wise to get that fixed before you ship it overseas? Mine started leaking oil then I ended up with water in the oil and oil in the water - not a good combination!
This is probably over-simplistic, but can you just fill the oil reservoir once you have it back in your possession, then leave it for a while before switching on?

put a small container of oil 1 litre should do in the car boot with a plug spanner or injector spanner. On arrival at overseas destination remove plugs/injectors one at a time put a small amount of oil in the hole and leave for an hour or so, on starting this should have lubricated enough to stop the metal on metal sound you hear wearing your piston cylinders out before their time.

If there is no oil in the engine it will burn up. Make sure the oil isn't leaking out. At least not more than a quart a month say. Make sure it has oil. There is a dipstick for checking that.

Oil naturally runs down due to gravity, once you start the engine and the pressure is there it doesn't take long to get it back to where it needs to be.

all you need to do is make sure the oil is on the mark on the dip stick and it will be ok start it leave it half a min befor you rev it to give the oil chance to get back where it is needed
