I had my tonsils taken out many years ago. The operation itself wasn't too bad, as you will be put to sleep during the procedure. You will have a sore throat for quite a few days after, I ate lots of mashed potatoes and ice cream.... Some people I know have actually had baby food as well. It did help me a lot in the long run, as I ended up being a lot heathier overall after having them out, less colds and coughs, etc. Good luck.

I had my tonsils removed in 1961, when I was 6. It hurt for a few days. It wasn't a bad trade off, as I got tons of ice scream.
The funny thing about it was in those days, the anesthetic used was not intravenous; rather it was a gas that was applied through a mask that you had to breathe in. I remember the doctor told me to breathe deeply while he held the mask under my nose. I must have made a face, because he said, "If you don't like the smell, just blow into it. Of course, being young and silly, I tried to blow away the "bad smelling anesthetic", which only caused me to breathe in more. I was out in two seconds flat.
Medical science did not know much about tonsils in 1961. They were considered a vestigial organ, i.e., serving no purpose, much like scientists believe that humans descended from apes and we had tails, but of course, no longer have one (vestigial).
Don't remove your tonsils if you can help it. Medical studies have shown that the tonsils are actually a part of your immune system.
If you need to have the surgery, its not the end of the world. You'll live a long life without them.
If you are having surgery, good luck to you. And don't worry. All will be well.
Good luck to you.

I had my tonsil out in 1961. My throat hurt some, but not too badly. And I got to eat all the ice-cream I wanted. :) My sons would tease me that I could remember this for so many years. I was 8 years old and it was a big deal to me. I went to a hospital about 4 hours from home as it was where my big sister was in nurse's training.

Well it depends how long it will take to heal usually three days and you get to eat Ice cream a lot to help heal the operated tonsils ! If you still feel uncomfortable about the pain the Homeopathic Remedy ARNICA 1M(1000) one dose about 2 hours before you surgery and one dose after will help you heal very fast without any side effects or complications and with virtually no pain and stiffness .
Take care and God Bless you !
Best of luck in your surgery and get well soon !

Yeah, I did. It was years ago but I remember.Funny though, the most outstanding thing I remember is the ice cream. That was the bribe to get me to get it done. Actually that was the same bribe they told all us kids. We'd get all the ice cream we could eat.
Ever body laughed, me too.
I had to go in the night before.Early morning they started to take a few tests, do prep and than they gave me orange juice and a pill.
When I woke up my throat was a little sore and the thought of being able to eat ice cream when the operation was over looked better than ever.
Now all I wanted was to get it over with.I couldn't believe it when they came in to tell me it was over.
"What flavor do you want", they asked.
It's really a simple procedure. It was easy. I've had much worse sore throats.
Believe me a tooth ache and dentist is far, far, worse.
Good luck..

It's definitely an infection - go to the doctor. Not the dentist like the other person that posted. A Dentist can't help with tonsils!

Normally, you will have a sore throat for a few days that should get better as time goes on. Cold foods, such as icecream, popsicles, and such usually help relieve the pain to a tolerable level along with a mild anagelsic. Your doctor can answer any questions you have in details. Good Luck!!!

my grandson just had his tonsils and adenoids taken out,and he did well, the ice cream afterwards will give you some nutrition, but the ice pops work better and don't give you all that heavy muccous in the back of your throat.

Your gonna have a sore throat, no doubt about it.
But, they have the Chloroseptic spray that will help a bit, as it numbs the back of the throat, so I would use that after you come home.
I wish you well..

it doesn´t hurt that bad, the throat is sore for a couple of days, and you can´t eat anything solid, just ice cream, soup, jello, soft foods.
