do you join google to sign on gmail i thought for sure gmail was by invitation?

you can't have a gmail account by registering to google.com
find somebody who has an existing gmail account, then ask him/her to send you an invite, so you can register your own gmail account, and return the favor to those who are dying to have one too.

it was, and you still can invite people, but you can now join it without one. you do have to give a phone number to prevent spam, but you can get it without an invite.
