I have been told to stand with the hot shower hitting the back of my neck and do exercises like: Stand up straight, look forward and try to pull your chin and head backward while keeping it straight. Turn your chin to your left shoulder and then to right. (All of these should be done slowly without jerking.) Lay your head over sideways so your ear goes toward the same-side shoulder. Repeat on other side. Try to touch chin to chest and then lean head backward as far as is comfortable. I routinely do these now while showering. It might help also to have a "roll" pillow under your neck when you sleep, instead of a flat or mushy one.

I don't know about excercising it, but I would think massaging it would really help. You could get one of those hand-held vibrators and use it on your neck. Also, if you got a hot tub with high jets that hit your neck, WOW, would that work!!

I can't tell you exactly what exercises to do, but the muscle in your neck is called trapezius and it extends downward in the middle of your back. Get a diagram of the muscle and what exercises will work on that particular muscle.

THE PAIN IS COMING FROM CONGESTION AND STIFFNESS AND LACK OF MOVEMENT. EVERYTHING TIGHTENS DOWN. IT IS SOMETIMES CALLED "SPLINTING." YOUR BODY IS ONLY TRYING TO PROTECT ITSELF. ALL I CAN DO IS ADVOCATE FOR WHAT WORKS FOR ME, OKAY? I SEE A CHIROPRACTOR REGULARLY. HE ADJUSTS MY NECK AT EACH VISIT. HE DOES ONE ADJUSTMENT TO EACH SIDE, AND AT 63, I HAVE 180-DEGREE MOVEMENT OF THE SKULL AT THE TOP OF THE SPINE. I HAPPEN TO BELIEVE IN CHIROPRACTIC. IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. IF YOU FIND A GOOD CHIROPRACTOR, YOUR PROBLEMS CAN BE 80% GONE IN ONE VISIT. YOU THINK I'M PUTTING YOU ON, BUT I AM SPEAKING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IN THIS INSTANCE. I WISH YOU GOOD FORTUNE FINDING A SOLUTION TO YOUR SITUATION, AS I KNOW HOW ABSOLUTELY DEBILITATING THAT KIND OF NECK PAIN CAN BE. IT IS RELENTLESS AND IT MAKES IT REALLY DIFFICULT TO CONCENTRATE ON ANYTHING ELSE. SLEEPING IS AWFUL BECAUSE EVERY TIME YOU MOVE A LITTLE IT JUIMPS IN PAIN. YOU MISS YOUR SLEEP AT NIGHT... I WOULD HAVE YOU SEEK OUT A CHIROPRACTOR. SENT TO YOU WITH UNDERSTANDING AND CARE FROM SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE. - G.
