The only reason NOT to leave it at 85 or 90 would be if you have cats or other pets that will be there, or if you have computer equipment you are leaving in there. Some things need a cool environment.

Yes, turn it up to around 85 or 90 and once you get home you may turn it down to 77 or to your liking. This will save you electricity and the unit will work a lot less.

Put it on 85-90 and leave it there. Put the heat on 50.

I take it this is a window unit. It won't hurt anything. The only question to ask yourself is? dose the air condition ceate a easy entry place into my house.
