they sell all sizes of fly spray if they are by his eyes they are called face flys!they are rezally bothersome and will bite him alot!so hurry and go to your local feed store or tractor supply and buy a bottle of fly spray, just ask the clerk and they can help you find it!they can also cause an eye infection being around its eyes.if you are afraid to use the spray as a spray you can put some on a sponge and sponge its face with it.right now i use permethrin 10%,it cost me 17.99 for 32oz of highly concentrated syrup, you mix it with water,by the instructions.it will go a really long ways!you can also mix it up and p[ut it in a bug sprayer to combat the flys wherever you are keeping it!and you can use it all over his body and your barn too!

Horses all have personal preferences, just like humans. Your horse may indeed like cabbage... in fact mine prefers tator tots, no salt, no ketsup. Face flys are a serious problem!! I know a man who didn't go to any measure to help keep the flys away and after a while his mare got a serious eye infection, and now is completely blind. Applying fly spray around the eyes works, but is also risky. Just think of applying something like that to your eyes... it would burn and irritate your eyes. We always use face masks. They are relatively cheap, compared to the permanent damage the flys can leave behind. Check out my link below about fly masks. And have a great day!

A lot of horses object to fly spray around their eyes because spraying gets it directly in the eye and will usually burn or sting. Try a wipe-on fly repellent. I recommend Swat (clear formula, unless you want your horse to look WEIRD). It's actually a fly repellent/wound dressing, but the clear formula is easy to put on, you can put it around the eye easily without irritating the horse, and its effect will last longer than flyspray. Swat is an ointment, so I don't think you should put it all over, flyspray is better for that, but dotting it around problem areas like the eyes, nose, hocks, or wherever else will help keep your horse more comfortable. You could also get a flymask. Our horses all wear them, and are generally happier with them on.

As for the cabbage? It probably won't hurt them, if they will eat it.

Yes a lot of horses like cabbage. ( Horses like everything!) There is a special fly spray for horse that will keep the flies away from the horse. With the problem your horse is having I would try to work it out with my horse and if it still didn't respond they I would put it into lessons but other than that try to work it out with your horse on your own. If you have the horse at your house and it involves riding problem try to ride thing horse 5 hours in the morning and 5 hours at night and that will usually solve your problem it did with me and my horse. He never listened and he was always doing what he wanted to. Don't let them and show it that you are boss and That your horse is not.

For the face flys they make a roll on fly spray it is in a small container cost about $4.00 or less and it has a roller ball on top you just turn it over and roll on around the eyes and on the face.
Most horses will not let you spray at their faces.
It is better to use the roll on or put the fly spray on a cloth and rub it on their face.
As for cabbage maybe they would like it, Most like carrots and apples but these are treat items.
I have a mare who likes bananas and a gelding who loves strawberries.

Not sure about the cabbage, ask your vet. You don't want the horse to end up with colic. For flies, try a fly mask. They loop behind the ears and velcro under the chin and keep flies out of eyes. You can also get them with ear attachments. They cost less then a quality fly spray.

I have never tried cabbage with my horses. As for the flys try a fly mask. Or try flyspray. Spray it on your hand and wipe it around their eye but make sure not to get it in it. statelinetack.com will have fly masks and spray. Also, I don't know if you have heard of them but there is a company that ships "fly predators". They are TINY bugs that you put around your pasture. They eat the fly larvae before they turn into flys. It has at least cut our fly population down by 1/2. They work really well. To find them try typing in "fly predators" in a yahoo search.

Some horses like cabbage but most horses enjoy apples more. If your horse is covered in flys try spraying it with fly spray. If you are going to use fly spray around it's eyes close its eye and then spray it. If that doesn't work try usind soap and water. Remember to scrub hard.

Try different treats for your horse to see if it likes it. I've had horses that would eat most any fruit or vegetable offered to them. Some horses love bread too. Just use these foods as treats and not a steady diet of them.
As for the fly problem there are sprays and powders that you can get to control them. Ask your vet or feed/tack store what is available at a reasonable cost.
