A taxi from the airport to the Strip will run you about $10 to $12 depending on the hotel. But, you can get a round trip schuttle bus ticket for about $10. or less. It may take a little longer, but they will drop you at the hotel at the same spot as the taxi.
You don't really need a car in Vegas unless you are gonna do some off-strip stuff like go to Houver Dam or down to Primm (at the Calif border) to shop. You can walk to most everything and there is a free monorail from Mandalay Bay to Luxor to the Excalibut Hotel. Then another free monorail from the Monte Carlo Hotel to Bellagios hotel. If you want to pay a couple bucks you can ride the monorail on the East side of the street. It starts at the MGM and runs up the Strip with stopos at Ballys, Flamingo, Sahara and the Hilton over off the strip.
Just take some good walking shoes. Plan which way you want to go to see stuff and use the air conditioned places to cool off as you go from hotel to hotel.

Taxi fare in Las Vegas is governed by the Nevada Taxicab Authority and as such all fares between 16 companies operating in the Las Vegas valley will be the same.
Once you enter a taxi the meter will start at $3.20. If the taximeter senses that the taxicab is moving less than 8-12 MPH, (as is the case when stuck in traffic) the taximeter will assess a charge of $.25 (twenty-five cents) every 41 seconds which equals $22/hour. While travelling at speeds above 8-12 MPH the rate is $2.00 per mile which is broken down into 1/8th of mile segments of $0.25 each. There is also an additional $1.20 fee for all trips that begin at McCarran Airport, this will result in trips to your hotel from the airport costing more than your return trip to the airport. Once the taximeter senses that the taxicab is moving at a speed greater than 8-12 MPH the fare calculates on the actual distance traveled.

Taxis typically charge a pick-up fee and then a mileage rate. If you look up "las vegas taxis" in Google you might even find a guide that tells you exactly how much they charge.

Its not easier to walk, the strip is looooooong. Last month I visited Vegas and payed about 8-10 bucks per cab ride. (I tipped). But they have other forms of transportation that are alot cheaper. They have the bus which is about 2 bucks. A trolley that goes up and down the strip for about 5 bucks a day. And the tram that's about 10-15 bucks a day.
You could just grab a cab to the vincenty of where you want to hang for the day though. But don't think you're walking from the stratosphere to the bellagio. It ain't happening.
At night, take cabs, its just safer.
