A physical exam should be performed, which may include an examination of the ears, the nasal passages and sinuses, and the throat. An otoscope may be used to see more deeply into the ears, nose, and throat. In addition, the teeth, tongue, tonsils, salivary glands, and TMJ should be examined for problems that might be causing referred pain to the ears. A culture and sensitivity test should be done if there is any discharge from the ears. X rays or a computed tomography (CT) scan may be required to diagnose the problem. Hearing and balancing tests are important to the diagnosis of an earache.

Ear popping is a way to equalize pressure in your ear. It may be that your ear isn't popping for some reason and the shhing noise that you hear may be your middle ear fluid moving around trying to equalize the pressure. If you have an ear ache and loss of hearing, you have cause to worry. Trying deep swallowing -- that should help.
Ear doesn't pop all the time, normally. It only pops when there is a pressure difference. I would say your ear will return to normal after sometime. If it continues to worry you...you should consult and ENT doctor (ear-nose throat specialist).

Go to the Dr. You may have a ruptured ear drum and putting anything in it could cause complications.
