Well, I guess that he already read Hobbits, Lor of the Rings and Harry Potter and at this age it's very hard to get a good book for a BOY. You have a lot for girls, you know, about gossiping, guys, kissing and all of these books 13-year old girls like but what you can buy for a 13-year old boy is:
Adrian Mole ( First part is Diaries 13 3/4 and you have the books that continue his life; they are great too)
Da Vinci Code (why not; you can start with that one, too)
Good luck!

Depends on what he likes to read, doesn't it?
My recs, if he is into such things...
Foundation Trilogy: Asimov
Pretty much anything by Heinlein (watch out for the late ones though, they get a bit more adult)
Any Dorsi book by Gordon Dickinson
Gets a little older, feed him the Earth Children series by Jean Auel. Little too much sex in it for age 13 though, but a heck of a read.
Oh, and Dr Dolittle, Hugh Lofting. Actually I have most of that collection still. Great stories.Still read them, and am one whole lot older than 13

Oops, left out Alice in wonderland, and the rest of the Lewis Carrol books. Er, you folks do understand those were really not children's books, Right?

I had a great librarian in High School. When I had read a heap of Ann McCaffrey books (which are fantastic) he handed me "The Hobbit"by Tolkein and said to just take it home and read it. I was hooked and then went on to read the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. I might have found them on my own eventually, but I will always be grateful for that introduction.
Other titles to consider include "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austin and The Narnia series by C.S. Lewis

Yes, try "The Incredible Journey" by Sheila Burnford this is a
very cool story about three animals an old male dog, a young male dog, and a female Siamese cat. They have to journey through the Canadian wilderness to get back to their owner, and home.
They made the movie into two films that you should find at Blockbuster "Homeward Bound" and "Homeward Bound II"
The young dog's voice is Michale J. Fox

Harry Potter series, my 15 read it because I left it laying around, sold his 14 year old sister on it and we had to get all the other books.
As a teacher I highly recommend its excellent writting, fullly formed characters and plot complete with many exciting twists and turns. You won't see him all summer.
