Which browser do you use? If you use Firefox browser, it has a built-in popup blocker which will let you automatically block most popups.
Also, even if you use Internet Explorer, you can download google toolbar or Yahoo toolbar which help you block popups.
Of course, not clicking on unnecessary IM links and emails is an important step in not getting to the point where popups start bothering you.

First, you shouldn't click on any pop ups, any ads that you see. It is like a chain, one thing leads to the other. You must remove all cookies and Internet temporary files. Then, you can use a browser that supports pop-ups blocking. Good Luck.

Not really no ! pop-up blocker doesn't take care of those partiular items.
You may just have to change your e-mail address, just by a letter or # at least !
Delete your cookies/files more in IE

I know!, that happens to me every time! I hate it, it always says "BIKINI DOLLS", or also there are free sign ups for some porn ****. I hate that. But then I downloaded some "Norton Anti-Virus" and it helps. You have to have a anti virus program for that to stop. It helped me. Hope you fix it! ;)
