Yea, I'd definitely go to some of those cafes where people pretty much just smoke marijuana. It would be cool to experience smoking with a bunch of people you don't know around and know you can't really get in trouble.

Amsterdam has way too many good museums to list, it will have to depend on your taste.

Once you arrive, there is an Information center in front of Central Station. There you can get a nice map with everything marked on it. They also sell a nice discount coupon book, well worth the money if you plan to visit museums.

As for the coffee shops (where coffee isn't the main menu item). I would suggest checking them out in the evenings, after most of the normal sights are closed.

A few places you might want to see that aren't in Amsterdam, but near by.

Zaanse Schans, this is a very short train ride, to a little historical village. Great place to get some good pictures of windmills. Also the little restaurant has great Dutch pancakes and coffee. Admission FREE

Alkmaar on a Friday morning! For two hours there is a live demo. of the old way cheese was weighted. Also there will be a little market set up where you can taste and buy cheese and local handcrafts. Again its FREE and less than an hour by train.

While Amsterdam is a great city, Haarlem isn't chopped liver. A bit smaller, with some wonderful old buildings.

You have one thing going for you, by going in the summer... long days!

If you want you can check out my travel page on virtual tourist, there I have reviews and pictures from my trip there.

The van Gogh Museum; it's amazing to see close up all those paintings that you've only seen in posters. You can see brush/palette knife strokes.

Ann Frank house.

Take a touristy canal tour. You'll get a good sense of the city, and spot places you want to explore further.

Boom Chicago and TVA do improv. I believe they're still located at the Leidseplein.

The red light district is an eye-opener if you've never seen anything like it. It's kind of seedy, though.

By all means check out the out of the way restaurants.

The Rikjsmuseum has a nice audio guided tour. Go if for nothing else than "Night Watch".

The most active club is the Melkweg.

And for total weirdness, visit the Museum of Torture.

Ann Franks house where the Frank family hid out during the war before they were caught. Anybody in Amsterdam will be able to tell you where it is. Take a tissue or 2 with you though as it can be very emotional. There are lots of museums too. My advice would be to ask a local for advice where to go and try and see things that are off the tourist track. Happy holiday! Oh... and when you get in a bar ask for a jenever with your bier ;-) it'll blow your head off hahahahaha!!

They have the most beautiful canals and gabbled houses. Lots of events especially during spring/summer. Dont miss The Queen's Day on April 29 (check again pls, i forget the date) and Gay Parade where the whole gay communities in Holland are parading on the boats along the canals. Way too much fun !!
