According to the philsopher Derrida every idea and concept in human civilization should be deconstructed and rewritten from the point of view of the feminine half. In other words duplicate the world in a feminine reflection of its masculine origins.
What ya think?

I don't like it.

First of all this assumes that ALL of human civilization is utterly male derived and dominated. This isn't true. It can be argued that men have had a bigger input in various recorded histories but it has been far from total domination.

Women control men just as much as men control women but often in more subtle and less overt ways.

In fact in a lot of ways modern Western civilization is already female dominated. I can think of dozens of ways that women control modern Western culture.

How many men think its important to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars for an outfit that they are going to wear only once? Do most men really care if their shoes match their outfit? The whole multi-billion dollar fashion industry is an example of how the feminine side of humanity is indeed a very powerful cultural force. There are many other examples.

In fact in Education there is a growing worry amongst scholars that young men are not getting enough male oriented learning and have few positive male role models because almost all Elementary School teachers are female.

Here in Canada, and I think in other similar countries, females get significantly better grades on average and complete more Bachelor degrees than men. There is real worry that the whole system is slanted towards a more feminine way of learning.

Now don't get me wrong, I support feminism. Well that actually needs to be discussed further too. There are two kinds of feminism. The first kind, which I prefer to call 'humanism', promotes equality between the sexes. I'm all for that.

The second kind calls for more power to women just for the sake of more power to women. I just call that reverse sexism and I think that that is just as dangerous and ill-conceived as a male dominated world.

We can't go back and change history, we can only go forward with love and compassion for all.

I don't know what world Derrida lives in, but what would be the advantage of changing from a masculine world to a feminine world? We're only beginning to recognize that there are two sexes, and that they think differently, express themselves differently, etc. We are beginning to reach for a neutral ground which accommodates both, and also trying to eradicate the purely masculine origins of some words. Why throw all that progress out just to tip the coin the other way for nogood reason?

This is what I think: Philosophers are often good at thinking in their ivory towers, but just as often have little contact with the real world. Derrida has good intentions, but most of these will just be used to pave the road to Hades.

Rewrite nothing. Political correctness is a disease and will correct itself when learned and trained biases fall away. Words only have the power that people give them.

This is what I believe: Western society needs atonement: An appreciation of differences with tolerance. Anything else is folly.

I am not familiar with Derrida. I think that if women would get equality we wouldn't have to worry about "rewriting or deconstructing" anything.

The fact is, if you go back in history to Greece and see how sexist (understatement) the philosophers were, you'd understand the horrid treatment of women that continues to take place today. The Greeks passed that on to the Romans who passed that on to the Jews, etc., etc.

Is it no wonder in this day we still deal with high numbers of domestic abuse, sexual harrassment, gender discrimination, etc.?

I think that's incredibly stupid and extremely unlikely. Feminism is one of the worst things in this world for woman- we all have a role in this world men and woman. This role shifts and changes a little as time goes on, but in general men and woman have certain roles in order to live together harmoniously- and it WORKS. Ask most ppl who have a successful marriage and you will see it's because the man knows how to be a husband, and the woman knows how to be a wife. Period.

Waste of time. If the ladies want to do it, go for it, but the reason everything is in the masculine is that it was men that were willing to take the time to write all this stuff down in the first place.

I agree with the answerer who said feminism has caused enough problems. Good grief.....rewriting everything?? These people ARE crazy! Okay, we can vote now, that's enough! Enjoy life instead of complaining because you hate being a woman! Oooohhhh I hate feminism.

I think feminism has already caused enough problems in this world. We don't need any more issued induced by it.
