You know, when the catcher is throwing the ball back to the pitcher after a pitch. It'd be physically possible to make a run for home, and steal it, before the pitcher could get the ball back to the catcher... but is it this a legal steal?

Yes, it is legal for a runner at 3rd base to steal home when the cathcer throws the ball back to the pitcher. This happened recently in the major leagues, in fact it was August 11th 2005, when jason kendall of the oakland A's scored from 3rd base, on a bad throw from catcher bengie molina to pitcher francisco rodriguez. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

here is the page with the video file of the play with jason kendall:

I coach little league and i use this play often. You need to have a smart, fast runner when you try it . have the runner get a bigger than normal lead without making it obvious (do it on the third pitch so they can forget about the runner, dont draw attention to much on the first couple of pitches)if the catcher dont look at the runner very good as soon as he throws it take off for home by the time the pitcher catches it gets the ball out of his glove and throws it home a fast runner should be able to make it with a good hard slide. It is important that the runner slides.GOOD LUCK its a lot of fun and it can shift mommentum in the game with that boost of adrenalin also when the picher is walking back to the mound if he doesnt look at the runner and turns his back on you take off for home again make a good hard slide

To steal home, run when the pitcher can't stop his wind up and then if you get there and the catcher has the ball them plow him over and hope he drops the ball.

You bet it is legal and can be done particularly if the catcher just lobs the ball back to the pitcher. The person who says i don't think so is wrong. I played baseball and you can.

You can try to steal a base anytime..
But if you try to do it when the catcher is throwing the ball to the pitcher,,hahaha he will surprise you,,you will be out..

Yes...anytime the ball is in play you can steal a base. Unless "time "is called...and the batter is not in the batter's box.

The return throw to the pitcher can also be a relay throw...so the runner has the same opportunity to advance...AFTER tagging up.

It is legal to steal home at this time, in the majority of, but NOT in all leagues. Although it most frequently occurs in minor baseball, Major League Baseball has seen it's share of this steal occurring.
It's sure embarrassing!

Check the source link which lays out when the best opportunities come about.

As long as the umpire has not called time out the ball is in play and a steal can be tried. However it would not be the smartest thing to do.
