1. "pretentious" (adjective)
...which is in itself a big word meaning "characterized by an assumption of dignity or importance; making an exaggerated outward show;" it definitely has a negative connotation.

2."eloquent" (adjective)
meaning "having the power of fluent, forceful, and appropriate speech"; this one has a positive connotation

3. "pedantic" (adjective)
meaning "ostentatious in one's learning; overly concerned with minute details of formalisms"; this implies a negative connotation, of course

4. "articulate" (adjective)
meaning "using language easily and fluently; having facility with words"; another one with a positive connotation

Learn to use all four of these, and maybe you'll be accused of using big words, too!

Intelligent. I'm not in college, I'm only 15 and a Sophmore in Highschool but I use a vast vocabulary of words, some of which aren't even large, but are synonyms of a word I would have normally used. It comes from reading and studying.

intelligent is hardly a big word or a word of vast vocabulary...intelligent just means smart & it doest have to be just vocabulary

A pretentious know-it-all tried to be eloquent , whom unfortunately was pedantic when trying to be articulate on Yahoo!Answers.

did I win?....rofl.....probably not....

However, I do agree with Magistra's answer!
