I dont remember much about it. I remember that the main charicter got her name from some kind of mark on her ribs (and that she might have been left in a basket at a castle, not clear on that though). Then there was something about a changeling and everyone blamed the main character, when she was really trying to help and she had to hide in the forest. Then she turned into some kind of bird at the end and flew out the window. I know thats not very clear, but its all that I remember.

I dont remember it being a specific retelling of a fairy tale, but it might have been.

try the biggest local library - childrens section. theres generally a "master" book of all kids books. they cross reference it by main character/title/author/ main subject ect. stupid as it sounds try closing your eyes and reciting the story - color of the bird ect - can narrow down the search. even if you can remember when you first heard it you can narrow down publishing dates. meaning if you heard it when you were 5 then you know that it was published Before what ever year that was. good luck doesnt sound like any story i know.

As far as I remember, I think you are speaking about a fairy tale in which it was told why the female sparrow has lines on its feathers
