First off, Act. Audition in anything and everything and then if you get a role, take it, no matter what the role. The more experience you have, the better. Also, go to school. I know this is a bit controversial because technically, you do not need a degree, and if you have one, no one cares. But it is a fantastic way to hone your skills and study with professionals.
You do not need to be born into money (although I'm sure it would help). If you are born into money or fame you have a substantially better shot at making it big, but a vast majority of 'successful' actors will not "make it big", and that is not what most of them are after. Acting is an art, and for most of the artists it is about the art. That is why people act when there is no real financial gratification. Even a Broadway actor in a long running show has little chance of making over $50k a year.
Essentially, to become an actor all that you have to do is act. If you have other goals like being rich, famous, or acting on Broadway then you might need to go a different route.

Acting is an art as well as a craft and requires an extreme amount of dedication. Most people work on their craft for many, many years before they have any chance of making a living at it. Do some research. Pick 5 actors who you want to emulate and find out who they studied with. Most likely you will need to spend siginificant time working on your art before you will have a chance to study with those people, but you will at least have a goal.
I also suggest you watch every episode of Inside the Actors Studio and start watching DVDs the second time with the commentory turned on.

1. If you are in school, join the drama department.
2. After high-school, go to college and major in theater,
3. Go to graduate and get an MFA in theater.
An MFA in theater is a great way to get a good agent!
Contact your local community theater, they may have open auditions for roles, volunteer with them, you may get a role.
Talent agents and talent managers go to theaters to find clients they may want to represent.

First of all, you must have the talent. I would highly recommend that you take some acting classes to see if you do have the talent and ability and to see if this is what you really want to do in life. The rest will follow....................

Before you do anything else, ANYTHING ELSE, you must truly enjoy doing theater. You have no idea how much crap there is to deal with both backstage and onstage in a theater. If you find that you truly enjoy theater, then maybe you can pursue it; however, there is no guarantee that you will be successful at it.
