In what society? What country? Around here, reading, pop literature, etc. is considered cool. Being able to discuss what you have read is even cooler.
The only people I have ever seen put down reading are usually those of limited intelligence.

Is it considered 'uncool' by uneducated, jobless derelicts? I don't think that anyone who is even remotely educated would consider reading 'uncool' and besides that; if a person enjoys reading, then I say 'go for it'. The non-readers are the ones who will remain jobless hanging out at the steet corners getting in trouble while the reader will value his/her education and excel in life and the workforce.
The bottom line: Be your own person!!

Because people here don't value education and are ignorant. I think it's because discipline has been taken out of the schools, and people here have learned not to take it seriously, which is a grave mistake.
It will hurt this country competitively for years to come.

It is a prevailing cultural anti-intellectual trend encountered early in educational life. It also accounts for the suspicion harbored against scientists and thinking people in general.
We pay for it by having fewer and fewer capable scientists, researchers and engineers and by having science itself hijacked by pseudo-science and superstition.

Because ignorance and lack of education are idolized by the youth culture of today. Perfect example, rap.

Because the morons who will eventually be asking "Would you like fries with that?" for a living think it's not cool to be smart.
