This is a good question.

It clearly takes energy to toast a piece of bread, and so it clearly takes more energy to toast two pieces of bread. So the simple answer is that more energy *must* be used.

But of course its not so straightforward, because a toaster is very thermally inefficient - very littly of the energy used actually goes towards bread toasting - most of it just heats the air.

So the question really becomes one about how much energy is wasted. In other words does the toaster waste less energy with both slots filled than only one? And if it does waste less energy, is the amount less enough to make up for the extra energy needed to toast the second piece of bread.

I suspect that there is not a lot in it.

But of course if you want to save electricity you should toast two together rather than one after the other, because otherwise all the energy used in one slot is wasted.

I think you will use a little more energy toasting two pieces of bread instead of just one. The second piece of bread will absorb some energy, increasing the length of time the elements are on before tripping the thermocouple.

if you intend to toast 2 pieces then toast them both together - if you do not intend to toast 2 pieces - do not waste the bread and toast only 1

Of course, it's like doing a load of laundry with half the clothes. The same amount of energy will still be used.
