video games, money, gift cards to Blockbusters or Hot Topic, concert t-shirts, concert tickets, cd's, dvd's, a PSP,...a lot of electronic stuff mostly. If you get a cd or a concert ticket, you'll want to know what kind of music he's interested in (hiphop, emo, punk, alternative rock, indie/lowfi, techno, death metal, goth, pop, whatever...) and what he already has. Music that has just come out that he may or may not have include new cd's by Tool (metal/rock), AFI (goth/punk), Chili Peppers (rock), The Raconteurs (rock), etc...
My friend got my 15 year old son two concert tickets to Panic! at the Disco for his birthday. He was thrilled. But he was equally happy with the $50 bucks he got from his grandfather.
You could always get him a magazine subscription to Rolling Stone or Spin. Some might suggest a subscription to Playboy or, for a little less skin, Maxim, but I'd definitely clear that with the parents first, and even then, I'd only do it if I knew the kid really well, set a good example as a responsible adult in life, and was well known as the incorrigible uncle or close family friend that everyone loves in spite of his longstanding bachelorhood.
If the boy you know is anything like my son, who is into Renaissance Faires and that sort of thing, he might be interested in some of the paraphernalia associated with that. This year, I got my son a kilt for his birthday at Utilikilt and a black and red pirate bag to wear at faire. He also collects knives, and pocket knives are an option if the kid is a "stable" older teen and the parents approve. I recommend the Van Hoy Snap Lock, a folding knife by CRKT. It's available in most knife shops for something like $60; it was the knife of the year a couple of years ago. Of course, he should realize that it's illegal to carry a knife to school. My son keeps his knives at home and only wears them when in costume out at Scarborough Faire.

Generally, a music gift certificate would work to a place like Best Buy. Or, find out what they like...maybe they're into sports so you could give them a gift card to a sporting store...etc.

its best if you give something but not moey, because if they are the type of person that use drugs or drink or go to party, they will use gift for bad things. that is why best thing to do is buy something they like, since you are his or her friend, and know what he like, buy them those gift. but if i were you i would buy video game to the male person or computer game. but make sure u know which one he likes. because i can't play half life or CS or any other game :)

It depends on how much money would you like to spend for. I think you should give some details beside your question.
Good Luck.

I always give my teenage nephews money, but if you know them well, consider what they are interested in and take it from there.
