i have had success with moth balls-- 2-3 feet apart -with rabbits squirrels and even my dogs--cost is less than $3 a box and they usually last more than a month before they evaporate

I heard human hair in the garden will stop the varmints, so I clean my hair brush out in my garden.
Also, if you buy some bug killer (its called seven) and sprinkle it on your plants, they don't like the flavor, so they stay away. I did it after re-planing my tomato's 3 times this year and I am not sure if they got full or the seven worked, but they finally left my garden alone.

Black pepper sprinkled around in it works to keep cats out...perhaps it will help with squirrels. But the nukes suggested by the other guy might work too.
