1)actually a peanut butter sized tank is good for 1 beta.
2) actually betas do need a lot of water to survive. fill the peanut butter sized tank about 3/4 of the way full with water.
3) a 10-gallon tank is to large for one goldfish so a 50-gallon tank is way to large.
4)they do live in small spots

1.A ten gallon tank is perfect for bettas - Well that would be fabulous for a betta! Wonderful!
2.Bettas dont need that much water to survive- true, they can SURVIVE in a small amount of water, but merely surviving and THRIVING are two different matters all together.
3.A 50 gallon tank is perfect for a goldfish- A 50 gallon tank is wonderful for a goldfish. The rule of thumb for goldfish is 10 gallons each for the fancy (short bodied) variety and 20 gallons for commons, comets and shubunkins. I believe they need much more than that, but this is just a general rule of thumb for the average goldfish keeper. I KEEP ONLY 3 GOLDFISH IN A 55 GALLON TANK. And I believe that is how it should be.
4 In the wild bettas live in bodies of water that are very small (almost the size or bigger that a puddle)- not true...they live in shallow bodies of water that are very large.
(bitterjane I like your posts. I wish people would get it about goldfish also. That is why I promote my favorite goldfish site. I just hope it will get through to some people.)

MonkeyBrains said: "3) a 10-gallon tank is too large for one goldfish so a 50-gallon tank is way to large."
That's false. It depends on the size of the goldfish. A 5 inch goldfish would not live well in a 10 gallon tank. I'm tired of people thinking all goldfish need is a small bowl. They actually prefer a lot of room. So a 50 gallon tank would be ideally perfect for any size. 10 would be ok for one that is under 3 inches. But it would only be okay until the goldfish got bigger - AND yes they will get bigger. I am also tired of people believing the myth that a fish will not out grow the size of it's tank. That's insane to believe that.

l. you don't need a lot of water--the one answerer disagrees but you can put a betta in a vase with a lilly plant and it will thrive if you no what you are doing and it is not cruel--they are safe, they are fed and happy I would place a betta in a one one gallon tank if you don't use the vase
2. Betta don't need a lot of water--when purchasing bettas from a wholesaler, they are in just enough water to keep them wet but i would change part of the water (depending on the container they are in) if you have them in an aquarium-less water changes are necessary--keep an eye out for fungus developing-looks like white cotton
3. goldfish will get larger --it is better to get a tank that is good for a goldfish as they will need more room as time goes on.
4. About bettas-no one has mentioned this so I guess they don't realize it but when baby betta fry are born--they usually get along but once the babies are separated-they ten to fight to the death. Also, males "may" kill quite a few females until they find the one they want.

1,3true 2,4false, the best thing for bettas is a proper tank set up with 1 male and as many females as possible and maybe a few livebearers, people think they can strive in small vases or jars, this is not right, its cruel.Bettas live in slow moving streams and all shapes and sizes of ponds. They strive and breed in a good swimming space and dont reach their full size potential or health in cramped circumstances.FACT.Goldies are much hardier and you are right , they do need a bigger swimming area such as an aquarium or better still a good size pond where they reach their full growth potential. Best of Luck with both projects. ps . dont listen to monkey brain , he is very wrong... peanut jar, no,no
