My deck was painted by the previous owner and I want to strip the paint off. How do I go about doing that? Also, can I stain the deck after it's stripped of the paint, or do I have to repaint it.

What I was asking is if the deck was stripped of the paint, will it hold any kind of stain. I don't want to strip the paint off and stain it, just to turn around and have to repaint it.

buy some turpentine or paint remover...go to your local hardware store...it should be over near the paint....allow it to soak for about an hour then come back and wash it off with a power washer

That would depend on the size of the deck. Get a piece of wood that is painted. Put some paint remover on it and see how much work is involved in stripping to the wood. Then let it dry and try to stain it. How's it look? How tired are you? Look at your deck and imagine doing the job to the whole deck, railings and all (if there are any). Should put it all in prospective. Personally, I would paint. Been there done that and will never do it again.

Lead based paint hasn't been manufactured for the consumer market for many years, but nevertheless I'd check to make sure what kind of paint it is. It's probably modern oil or latex type paint. If the deck surface is at least 1 inch below the door threshold, I would kill two birds with one stone and simply apply a layer of the new composite plastic decking boards made by Trex on top of the current painted deck lumber. Then you'll never need to worry about staining the deck again!

POWERWASH IT!!!! its way better than scraping or sanding. Less backbreaking too. You can rent a high pressure powerwasher at a tool rental place. Usually about 50 bucks a day.

people shouldnt paint decks, it is only creating work for the future. Never paint surfaces that are walked on (traffic areas)

u can either remove it with turpentine, or u can scrape it off. also, u dont need to repaint or anything b4 u stain, that would just defeat the purpose of the stain. the best thing to do would be to scrape it off, sand it down, and restain it.
