You don't have to even pull back the carpet in order to use screws. You just need to try to find joists for the screws to grab onto. the carpet will cover any screws you put in provided that you sink them a bit below the plywood subfloor. It will take a few screws at 1 inch intervals in order to find the joist below. You will be able to tell when you hit the joist by the torque reduction on the drill and the feel. Then find which direction the joist runs and continue running in screws until the squeak fades away. Take your hand and run it over every screw to make sure you have ran it down below the carpet and into the plywood so you dont catch it on your feet. Unscrew any screws that do not grab the joist so it dont back out and become a toe cutter. Hope this helps.

if u cant take the carpet up, do this:

take 2 #8 finishing nails....

locate the floor joist.......

try and find center of the joist with one nail ( dont go 2 deep)
remember once u find the edge of the joist, the joist or 1 1/2 " wide so move over about 1/4 of an inch from the edge toward the joist.

take the first nail, coming from one edge of the joist and at an angle of about 45 deg. install the nail up to the carpet.......

take the second nail and coming in the opposite direction of the first and at 45 deg. install the second nail.

take a nail set and finish driving the 2 nails up flush....

do this about evey 3-4 inches in the area of the squeak ....

if u can take the carpet up just screw every 2-3 inches in the area of the squeak with 2 " screws.....

If you can pull up the carpet, find where the plywood is nailed down. Then with a good power drill (or cordless) screw in 2-inch screws in any space where it seems the nails are not doing their job. They might be loose.
