Novels come in all varieties, from historical stories, to war stories, to mysteries, to crime scenes. There are imaginary worlds like fantasy, and science fiction. There are love stories, there are romances, there are thrillers, there are murders, and westerns.

Some of the suggestions here I have read and HATED! Some, I have read and loved. Some books have very simple story lines that are easy to follow, others have twisted, hidden themes that make things more difficult to understand.

I highly recommend novels by Michael Crichton. He wrote a number of stories that have been made into movies, and his stories are filled with action and edge of the chair suspense. His books, by the way, are much better than the movies. Try JURASSIC PARK. That's a very good read, as is it's sequel.

If you like war stories, try Tom Clancy's THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER.

Both of these books have suspense, take place in modern times, entertain for hours, and are not too difficult. Both authors are very good and each written many novels.

Jane Eyre is really, really, good. I'm reading it at the moment and I love it but might not recommend it as a 'first novel' as it can get a bit heavy (with the olde english language). If you're into the weird and wonderful try something by Mervyn Peake like The Fantastic Mr. Pye (available from Amazon). It's easy, short and very funny. If you like that then try something bigger like Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake, it's just the most amazing book and I'll keep re-reading it for ever I think! If you go to Amazon.com they'll recommend books that should be right for you, they're pretty spot on with me (oooh, anything by Sarah Waters is fantastic - kinda olde English lesbians, wahay!)

Jurassic Park is probably the best start. It's easy to read and understand, especially if you've seen the movie. Don't worry about it boring you if you've seen the movie, the book is entirely different except for the core plot and characters - the man that owns the park, Hammond, is cast in an ENTIRELY different light in the movie than he is in the book, and there are tons of scenes that were not in the movie.

The book is ten times better.

I also reccomend Dan Brown as an author, he has five books, I have read all of them and they are excellent.

Another good book is Stephen King's Cell. It's very easy to follow, unlike some of his other books, and tells a really cool and interesting story.

There aren't many good, famous novels that aren't hard and
difficult to read if English isn't your first language. Personally
I like Ernest Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls"-the style is fairly simple and the story is interesting.

It's not exactly famous, but my suggestion is a book called Life of Pi. It's an amazing read, about 400 pages, it's raw, gritty, colorful, and amazing. It is one of my favorite books, and a great summer read!
If you're ready to tackle a bigger book after that, read the Count of Monte Cristo. It's about 1400 pages, but it's a spectacular, gripping story of love and revenge.
And if you haven't already read them, read some of George Orwell's books like 1984. He's a great author.

My suggestion would be to go to a local bookstore or library, and just wander around looking at books until you see one that really appeals to you and either buy it or check it out. Always read the back cover and maybe the first couple of pages to see if it really appeals to you.

Also, if you haven't read the Harry Potter books, I recommend them. They're quite good and easy reading. And they'll last you awhile, given there are six of them out already.
