The term "biology" in its modern sense appears to have been introduced independently by :

Karl Friedrich Burdach in 1800,
Gottfried Reinhold Treviranus (Biologie oder Philosophie der lebenden Natur, 1802) and
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (Hydrogéologie, 1802).

The word itself appears in the title of Volume 3 of Michael Christoph Hanov's Philosophiae naturalis sive physicae dogmaticae: Geologia, biologia, phytologia generalis et dendrologia, published in 1766.

Before biology, the term used for study of animals and plants was natural philosophy though that term also included what is now geology, physics, chemistry, and astronomy.

Here are some good places to start. Maybe you can narrow down what you are looking for by browsing these lists and sites. Have fun!

Too many to list.

Maybe read Asimov's guide that he wrote listing all scientists and their contributions. He lists himself too. Its a really good book and even talks a bit about the personalities of the scientists. MOst of the real discoverers were quirky to say the least. Also, James Burke books talk about the scientists too.

Some of my personal favorites are T.H. Huxley, Darwin, Wallace, Burbank, Linneaus, Mendel, I could list a bunch more.

I don't think you realize exactly what you're asking. There are a great number of people. It would take months if not years to describe it all. Your best place to look is a website about biology and start at the beginning.

Here's a good place:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Biology_basic_topics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biology

Look into the theories as they are listed and read about the contributers. that's the only practical way.

Gregory Mendel is a famous biologist--just do a google search. Also search for Watson & Crick (1953) they discovered DNA.
