I don't agree that he is... but tell me WHY YOU think he is. Is it the number of 'rings'? Is it his scoring? Was it the shoes? What was it that made you believe Michael Jordan was the best basketball player in the history of the NBA? I don't hear a lot of substanitive argument, just statements that people seem unwilling to defend or debate.

So come on, give it your best shot!

(After over 700 answers, this is my first question, and I'd really like to know why people believe what they do). Thanks in advance for your responses! Have a good one!!!

Hoop fan - you hit the nail on the head...sounds like you could write a book on the TRUE history of the NBA (as opposed to the ESPN
version, which states that nobody won six rings until Michael came along)... actually, I'm sure ESPN's version of history is really the Stuart Scott version of history.

But you are so right... in the end, it was all marketing.

hook, I don't agree that MJ could shoot from anywhere on the court accurately...his career 3 pt pct was 32%, it was below 20% for much
of his career, until the NBA moved the 3 pt line in.

Also, Jordan took part in one three point shoot out contest at the All Star game... he scored FIVE points...in TOTAL... that is the lowest total EVER scored by ANY player in the competition's history...I'm sure David Stern ordered the tape of that performance destroyed. I'm guessing that Stuart Scott was on a suicide watch for several days after THAT All Star weekend!

Well, let's see..... he can jump really high. Or maybe it's because he doesn't miss any shots. No, that can't be it. Perhaps, he's the best because he won slam dunk contests. Plus he pioneered the long baggy shorts. No, no, no....I think I got it: ITS BECAUSE ESPN SAYS SO !!!! Yeah, thats it.

Seriously, sorry to break it to you folks, but Michael Jordan is not the best player of all time. There is no legitimate argument, period. He might be one of the most exciting players to watch, but in terms of all around talent, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson are far and away much better.

The reason some people say Jordan is the best is because there has been no athlete in the past two decades who has been more over-hyped, more promoted, and more marketed than Michael Jordan. He could not possibly live up to those standards. Between movies, shoes, cereal boxes, fast food and everything else he's advertised, who hasn't heard of Michael Jordan ?

He came along at just the right time. David Stern became commissioner and heavily marketed the NBA to corporate America. What better face to put on it but Jordan. He played a flashier style of b-ball, be was polite and accesible to writers and fans. In other words, he was family friendly. But he played for the lowly Chicago Bulls.

So maybe if we increased the number of playoff teams from 12 to 16, the Bulls might make the playoffs and we can have Michael on t.v. more. And maybe if we added a slam dunk contest to the all-star game, people can see even more of Michael. Plus, we now have a 24 hour sports channel so nobody can possibly miss his high flying dunks and acrobatic moves.

Now, I 'm not trying to take anything away from Jordan. He was a great player FOR HIS TIME. He had great talent and was exciting to watch. But as far as dominating the league, that didn't happen until Bird and Magic had gone and the league expanded to 27 and 29 teams, thereby depleting the talent pool.

Hello Basketball Fans! OK OK Michael Jordan isn't the best NBA player of all time! Like 1 of the answers said, "He was so over publisized in his day it was almost as if it was branded to the brains of people who liked to watch a lotta TV! As far as records he just doesn't even have many. He's won all the rings but look at how deep those teams were! Frigan all-star teams + ! No doubt Michael was great! I'm not crazy here! Well maybe a little! LOL
If anybody out there is truly not one bit prejudice either way and really knows basketball inside and out and you know what type of player it takes to win at all costs and you'd pick him #1 of all players ever to build a team around and I mean a player that plays so much harder than anyone else it's ridicoulous, that can actually win 3 MVP's in a row not to mention 3 rings, and a player who is so intelligent about the game that he thinks 3 moves ahead like a chess player, not to mention a guy that had NO FEAR not an ounce of it but was so fearless on the floor that other players/coaches actually feared him and his trashtalking and his GUTS, and made everybody around him so much better because he was w/o doubt the most all around player of all time as well....
I'm talkin about the hick that was slow & couldn't jump when he came into the NBA named: The 1, the only: "Larry Bird"! Not much EGO! He's just gonna beat your *** and enjoy every second of it! Oh wait, and maybe just a little talented!!! But probably more than anything when he was in the big pressure cooker games he was so fun to watch!
ALSO If I had to pick the MVP today I'd be an idiot if I didn't pick The DIESEL!! Most a the guys in the NBA are just plain afraid of him!! Wouldn't you be? hahaha I'm outta here! Later!

All I can say is in every area of life and discipline there will always be that one person who stands up on top of everyone else, and of course the few nay sayres trying to steal some of that thinder. It is just natural for some folks to want to play devil's advocate against common knowledge. But when you win 6 rings and earn the Finals MVP for each and every one of the rings you won, dude, that's just too unblemished a record to dispute! No one else in the NBA can say that. There is of course much more could be said about why Michael is the greatest: the level of competitiveness in the era in which he played, the many stars he kept from reaching the promise land, the greatest offensive percentage in the playoffs and tied with Wilt for the greatest regular season offensive average (even as Wilt had an advantage in size that Michael could only make up by way of jumping) while still earning 9 times all first defensive NBA team honors (that is sick!) the pressure he played under (Michael globalized the NBA and every one was watching his every last second play) No player in the NBA given the level of marketing Michael had could say the he played under as great a level of pressure. Lastly, no other player has had as great a proportion of dominance over all basketball statistics as Michael had. The man was not the greatest at everything, but was the greatest at shaping his game as to have the least amount of weaknesses. What the hell else do you want from a player to call him the greatest??? You all talk all the crap you want, but if your very life depended on a last second shot, we all know whom you would pick to take it.

This is really the case when the legend became more than the man. It all started with his first years in the league, when he would put up incredible numbers (averaged over 35 pts a game a couple of times). However he kept getting stopped in the playoffs by a variety of teams. Finally when he broke through, he broke through in a big way. He won 3 consecutive titles and then won 3 more after he came back from retirement. NOt many players can put a claim to basically winning 6 straight titles, of course he did this while being the complete center of his team. He still put up crazy scoring numbers not to mention great rebounding and assists, all the while hitting the most incredible game-winning jumpers. Not many players can have their own top ten best game winning jumpers of all time. He also completed the trifecta of mvp's (mvp of regular season, all star-game and finals). Lastly and probably most importantly he was marketed very widely and globaly. I mean who hasn't seen a commercial having to do with Air JordanThast why when over a period of almost 2 decades people keep speaking about the accolades of a certain player, people start to think that he is the greatest.

He's considered the greatest because he won 6 rings, and a ton of scoring titles, and game winners/clutch shots, and steals titles which is coupled with the fact that he was the most dominate slam dunk champion. And slam dunking is arguably the most entertaining thing about basketball, especially when you jump from the foul line bring the ball back and dunk it. Not only that but to lead the leauge in scoring and steals is amazing which mean not only was he kicking the team's a$$ by scoring but he kept taking the ball from them too. He was also exceptional at just about every other stat for his position. For example he got a lot of blocks for a SG.

There where many reasons for MJs greatness. It wasn't only his basketball skills but also his marketability. He changed the way the game was played. He did score many points but look around MJ he also made a team out of it considering Pippen averaged 21.7 ppg also. When the chips where down he could score. The big one is the rings which he owns 6 of. Then how MJ was all over the TV and most people liked him and he stayed out of trouble unlike Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, etc. Yes he gambled but not on his games which made him human like us.
