Yes, for most of my life.I finally got the help I needed and am now working it through. If this is a serious problem with you... if you are giving up parts of yourself to win over others, and/or if you are acting self-destructive, then you might look into seeking some outside help. I was finally very lucky in that I met a person who'd been through the same situation and was able to help me to help myself. I intend to have something she says printed on a t.shirt, along with a big golden butterfly "Grace, Truth, and Time." That what it takes; self-honesty is the biggie. Good luck!

Yeah I have. I am the first half of a two person name. HollyJIm. I happen to be the Holly part of that. Some times I think that I will never remember how to just be Holly again. But I do. I just have to work at remembering who Holly is without the Jim.

Whatever's happening right now, don't forget this: whoever you wanted to be ... that means something to you, I mean the real you.

Maybe you want to be /this/ sorta person, or /that/ sorta person ... well, the real you actually and truly wants that. Sooooo /instead/ of trying to be that sorta person (which, let's face it, is just fake) how about really and truly being yourself? I mean ... figure out how come you value /this/ or /that/ ... maybe there's something good you can do for yourself without becoming false!

"To thine own self be true ..."

No...but I have seen other people do it.

One thing that has always been very important to me is being true to myself. You can not make everyone happy all the time and the most important thing is that you make yourself happy. And to do that you have to be true to yourself if nothing else. And the amazing thing is when you are truly happy other people around you like you more and are happier too!!!
When you are constantly trying to be something you are not you aren't actually happy even if you can put on your "happy mask". It is just so much easier to be yourself!

If an Elvis impersonator is LESS REAL than 'himself', it's because he imitates another's mannerisms:the simulation of being identical to one which one is not. But you'll have a tricky time thinking about "IS Elvis really himself"... how far into the regress do we have to go? We will end up abstracting every 'personality trait' leaving "you" as an immaterial spark.

That's the furthest from 'myself' I want to be.

I took a six year vow of poverty and let all of the crap be stripped away. it worked. it wasn't a religious vow, just a vow to myself to not be so concerned with materialism. Eventually, when you're out there singing for change in the rain, you become so real it's hard to go back to the fake and plastic person you thought people wanted you to be. People kept telling me to get a job and spitting on me, and they didn't realize I had a commitment to myself to become someone different thru a process of self poverty.

The best thing you can do in life is always be yourself, more people will trust and love you; unless you are a bad person when you are yourself?

Yes, I have. I did to impress someone. But after I'd realized I'd created a monster of myself, I figured the certain someone isn't worth it if that someone couldn't accept me for who I am. I became myself again, and it felt really good.
