i have a 4 gig western digital hard drive i tried adding to my gateway GP7 - 600 and it won't boot fully and it'll freeze. I was wondering if there was a way to add it on as a external hard drive or would i have to format it first or anything?

Adding a hard drive to a current computer is a relatively easy thing to do. There's 1 of 2 configurations that need to happen.

1. The primary harddrive has to be set on master and the secondary harddrive has to be set on slave. You'll find these configuration setting on the back of your harddrive where all the cables plug into it.

2. Both harddrives have to be set on cable select (CS) and the system will choose which harddrive to boot to.

I'd go with the first option because if you're taking a harddrive from another computer and placing it on an existing computer, that means there's now two operating systems on the harddrive that are the primary OS.

Make sure this second (HP) drive is set to the "slave" setting on the jumper. Make sure that the Gateway's hard drive is set to the "Master" position and not to CS or cable select on the jumper. So, it looks like this:

Original Gateway HDD=Master jumper setting
Old HP HDD=Slave jumper setting

You'll have to format the old HP drive too.

check the pins in the back and make sure it's set to slave or cable select (which means that it determines whether it's the primary drive or not by whether or not it's the first drive on the cable.)

make sure the other drive is set to master or cable select.

if nothing else, you can buy a usb external hard drive box and run the drive from there. it's a handy thing to have anyway.
