Yes - because teachers are teaching to achieve high scores on the STANDARDS OF LEARNING (SOL) achievement tests rather than teaching. How do you "standardize" learning anyway? Everyone learns at different rates and in different ways. To attempt to force everyone to learn at the same rate and in the same way is defeating education. I have no knowledge about how to maintain an automobile - does that make me "stupid"? I can play chess - does that make me "intelligent"? I DO, however. have the ability to LEARN how to maintain an automobile - should I CHOOSE to do so. And my neighborhood mechanic has the ability to learn to play chess - should he CHOOSE to do so. Both of us have made the choice to use our ability to learn to ACHIEVE different goals in life - isn't that what education is REALLY ABOUT?
