Files can be stored (or sorted) on any storage medium. There are magnetic (floppy disks, hard drives, tape drives, Zip drives), optical (CD or DVD), and removable (USB drives, camera cards). Storing them is really a preference - you can use whatever you have available if you wanted to.

As for sorting (I'm not sure which one you mean since you have a typo in your question), files are usually not sorted by any means that makes sense to us. The order they are saved onto your storage medium is affected by the amount of free space on the device, the OS, and the size of the file itself.
