I have a Dell 8200 dimension desktop that I want to connect to my other Optiplex GX 150 dell desktop and a notebook. What is the best new standards?
Buy it at Wal-mart or Ebay or where online? 802.11.g is best? What is the best USB connectors? Any other information that you can tell about wireless networking would help.

I'll make it easy on you, the answer is in your question.

Go to Best Buy and talk with a sales rep in the computers department who knows about home networking. Start out by telling them the PC equipment you have, and tell them you want a Linksys wireless G solution to connect them with USB adapters. You'll need the Linksys WUSB54GC wireless USB adapters and a WRT54G wireless router.

Different vendors like NetGear, DLink, etc might have a little bit cheaper prices than Linksys, but you generally get what you pay for because Linksys is generally accepted as the best for home networking. Some will argue otherwise. I have mostly used Linksys and Netgear, prefer Linksys.

You asked what are the best new standards and right now, the 802.11n stuff is still pre-standard but gives much better throughput and wireless range. But it's pre-standard so there's no guarantee it won't become junk when the final standard is ratified probably late in 2007. Also, I don't believe there are USB adapters that support this Pre-n option.

Make sure to use security on your new wireless LAN. Change the routers default password, and turn on encryption, at least WEP (minimal protection) and preferably WPA PreShared Key. Config the router and the clients with the keys according to the router/adapter manuals, not too complicated to do.
