The meaning of a sailor ( versus seaman, I read the other answers and I agree that it is tempting even for an Ex-Navy man) having a "swallow" tattoo, is this bird's association with Good Luck and Homecoming.
You might find it interesting that an Anchor Tattoo meant that you crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and a Turtle Tattoo symbolized that you crossed the Equator.

lol, how come the seaman have swallows?
am i the only one who's fighting the urge to make a joke?

i think that tatto was good luck, because the sight of a bird meant you were headed toward land. or something along that idea. might be wrong.

there is a tattoo of a swollow at any tattoo shop..it came from the Navy. I am sure you saw it many times and did not know it was a swollow. usually there is a heart next to it.
