Try Adaware or Spybot Search and Destroy. They are free. Download at the sites below.

You should have an antivirus program, and a firewall installed on your computer. You can download quite a few good free programs from various websites on the internet.
Depending on your system, because some take more resources than others, you can pick which one suits you best.
I have 2 systems, one is an old IBM with windows 98, and only 1.5 GB, and the other is a laptop with Windows XP and 60 GB.
The IBM taught me to use limited resources, as I had no space or speed, especially for many of today's programs.
The programs I use to keep my systems clean and problem free are:
Zonealarm firewall
Antivir antivirus
Spybot search and destroy - for various malware.
Adaware - for spyware
Regseeker - to clean the registry ( especially after of an infection)

These can all be obtained for free and are very user friendly.
The advanced features of Spybot (you have to turn it on once downloaded) are very handy! Especially the file shredder for your cache files etc. It also has a registry protector and blocks many things like bad urls, pop ups, bad downloads, etc. I love it!

Before you download, I would recommend that you go to the Trendmicro Housecall website and do a full system scan as it will also do the removal for you!

I have encountered the trojan downloader in various forms. It linked my computer homepage to small name search engines, online casinos, sex sites, and a bunch random sites in my favorites menu. I installed spysweeper onto my computer. It gives me a warning and prompt anytime a program tries to change my homepage. I use spysweeper in conjunction with norton antivirus, and yahoo antispy and that keeps me trouble free. Most things on my computer have been spyware and these programs have removed them. Its not a lot of money for the programs to be worry free.
