An 18 year old French boy is coming to stay with a friend of mine. He will be studying English at a local college and will stay with my friend as a member of the family. She will do his washing and make his food and all that, just like as if he was a part of the family. The problem is, she doesn't know how much to ask him for, in terms of his board and keep, and being British, this is a very delicate area. This is in the Cardiff area. His parents are very well off. What sort of money per month should she ask for? He will be staying for a year with her.

Ask advice from the college where the French young man will be studying. He is bound to make comparisons with what everyone else pays.

There are three elements to the charge. The rent of a room. The food consumed. The acting as a landlady/in loco parentis: cooking food, doing laundry and cleaning: the extra work he creates for her, I would think the charges respectively should be £60 a week, £30 a week, £30 a week as a minimum.

Thus £120 a week minimum and £150 a week would not be unreasonable.

Is there any way to check in the local area to see what the "going rate" is for this type of accommodations? Where I live it would cost around $400 - $500 (maybe 200 - 250 pounds) a month, without the food and laundry, but the cost of living is probably lower here (eastern Canada) than there.

well for a start it doesnt matter if his parents are well off or skint.
rent is rent and if you cant afford it you go elsewhere.
It all dependes on the area, what facilities he has access to and what sort of personal space he has you know that sort of thing.
Is your friend sure he wants everything doing for him? Some people would rather other people wernt washing thier underwear lol if you know what i mean.
maybe look in your local paper and adverts in shops to see what other people are charging in your area for the same sort of things.
You might even be able to get some advice from the C.A.B (029 2034 6499 Advice Line)
or your local council.

Contact the college that he will be studying at, they are able to give you a rough idea on what students are usually charged. Or even Cardiff university and ask how much rent students are expected to pay etc. I would not charge depending on what his parents earn as you are not aware of what circumstances they are in -as in paying for rest of his siblings and their lifestyle.

I had i lodger, and we charged him £360 a month, but he looked after himself, and used our washing machine and bathroom and all that, it depends if he is paying for his food i guess.
