It is because mx+b is = to y.

Think of this as a conversion of x into y, like converting degree Fahrenheit (F) into Celsius (C): F=(9/5)C +32 .
Water freezes at 0C or 32F, and it boils at 100C or 212F.
9/5 is the slope m and shows that one degree F is 'bigger' than C by a factor of 9/5. Thus m=9/5. Also, F and C do not start at the same temperature, so you have to add 32. Thus b=32. Those two points (freezing and boiling) establish a line. Every other temperate converted is on the same graphical line - just like two mathematical points defining a line.

Because b= y-mx

It just does. Aren't we lucky?

If I remember right...
The y coordinate of a point is equal to the slope of the line times the x coordinate of the point plus the y intercept of the line.

The equation works out that way with any straight line on a graph.

It's the slope-intercept equation used for finding the slope of a line or line segement on a figured plane.

y=mx+b because y is the y value, x is the x value, m is the gradient or slope, and b is the y intercept.

when mx+b=y of course

they're just coefficients to explain a line graph.

Y is the functions value, m is the slope of the line, and b is the y intercept.

y could equal ax + p, for all I care, it is more about how you use the function.

it is the formula for the slope of a linear line. m=slope and b= the y intercept. those should be filled in w/ #s in order to graph the line on a coordinate plane.
