I've used both Mathematica and MATLAB, and both have their pros and cons.

Mathematica is a bit more straightforward for doing computational analysis, since it doesn't require you to learn a programming language (albeit an incredibly simple one). But Mathematica is slightly more limited with what you can do.

Personally, I prefer using MATLAB, because you can format your output and create input options, as well as being able to run through the same procedure multiple times and only needing to change the input values, while Mathematica is a bit more cumbersome.

If you know what you're doing though, you can do a lot of the computational analysis using a spreadsheet program such as Excel.

try MATLAB. It's quite economical as well
