As a carpenter with a basic, all around knowlege of the other trades, I'm the first one any of my family comes to when they need something done, or when they have a problem. Me, personally, I would LOVE someone else in my family to take some of this burden. But I can see how a "needy" person might love and welcome this kind of attention and the feeling of being needed.
I hate it. It just means doing a lot of work for free.

Depends on who the family member is, I think. I am an electrician and about a year ago I got my little brother into the trade and I couldnt be more happy about it. But if my wife were to do the same, I dont know, I think it might kinda hurt my ego a bit. just because Im supposed to be the breadwinner of the family. Its not supposed to be her responsibility. (Sorry to all the female libs out there, i know i just pissed you off.) If she can do the same job as me, I feel less important and less needed. Its all about the ego with us men. Everybody knows that ;)

I can't see why it would bother them - maybe they think you'll be better at it than them?
If someone in my family followed me into the same kind of work, I think I'd be quite proud of it.

With siblings it's gottta be rivalry: you'll both wanna be better than the other. With Parents it may be that they want you to experience something new, possibly set your sights higher.
