We bring the variable (x in this case) to one side and everything else to the other side.
3x-5x = 3-7 [rearranging the equation]
-2x = -4
x = 2 [dividing both side by -2]

oh that's too easy
7 + 3x = 3 + 5x
=> 7 - 3 = 5x - 3x
=> 4 = 2x
=> x = 4/2 = 2

Remember that whatever you do to one side of the equation (= sign) you must do to the other side as well.
7+3x=3+5x
Get the x to one side. To do this subtract 3x from both sides
7+3x-3x=3+5x-3x
Reduce
7=3+2x
Get the numbers to one side. To do this subtract 3 from both sides
7-3=3+2x-3
Reduce
4=2x
Get x by itself. To do this divide both sides by 2
4/2=2/2x
Reduce
2=x
Answer is 2

I like how organicchem wrote "here's the answer" first, so that he can solve the problem and his answer will still be first. But here's the solution anyway:
7 = 3 +5x - 3x
4 = 2x
2 = x

7+3x-3x = 3+5x-3x
7=3+53x
7-3=3-3+53x
73=53x
x=73/53
Now I know I am such a genius.
