after the US's gr8 showing in the last world cup (knocked out by germany in the quarters, possibly due to a dodgy handballed german goal), I'm suprised it hasn't taken off more than it has.
I think it's a case of what you grow up with. From what I gather, it's only recently that US tv has started to provide decent coverage of soccer - until now all americans have had is all american sports like american football & baseball.
I think it will take off pretty soon if the US team can maintain or improve their form. You've drawn a tricky group this year, but if you can get through that, I wouldn't be suprised to see you make the semifinals - and the US become as football crazy as England!
Best of luck!
EDIT: Can I just take this opportunity to call the previous respondent (badal) an idiot! If the US didn't make the top 32, how come they're still in the tourney?

American have historically not been good at soccer. And what we can't dominate, we are not interested in. American business dictates that a fast return is needed on huge investments. This will not happen with soccer as it has competition from the 3 major sports in the USA. A good showing in the world cup would help US investors go for it, but this is not likely this world cup because the US ins in the Death Group at this world cup. It is unfortunate because this is the best US squad in the last few decades.

Torice you are wrong in everything you said. To answer this question, the sport is becoming more popular in America. It will not be as popular as American football. The media is now helping more by showing the games and actually talking about the World Cup. Can they do more to help? Sure they can. But as a true USA fan, I'll leave it to the team to show it on the field. The more success on the field, the more the sport will grow in this money hungry country.

Alot of Americans are involved. Its just that no one in other country's recognize the rise of American soccer fans. More Americans traveled to this world cup than ever before.
Besides its kinda like asking why arent Brazilians more involved in Basket-ball

We've got baseball, basketball, and football to keep us busy. More kids are playing soccer in high school but it hasn't gotten to the professional level. Too low scoring, too much running and people rarely get kicked in the head. American Footballs basically a bloodsport, basketball has riots between players and spectators, and baseball players empty the bench to charge the pitcher. Soccer has your occassional streaker but where's the violence? It happens after the match and we can just see that on the news without having to watch the game.
No, If it were about the fights we'd watch more hockey.

You are correct, in the U.S. people think football(soccer) is gay. But American football(NFL) involves a lot of man grabbing, tackling, and slapping butts after a good play. The reason it is hardly mentioned is because the American ignorance blinds them and we don't have a promising football league like the EPL.

Because soccer isn't yet competitively "exciting" for Americans who are used to the second-by-second excitement of American sports - such as "MARCH MADNESS'', NFL football with the public relations bonanza that is the SUPER BOWL, the NBA - that have been "tailored" to attract the largest possible fan-base.

we prefer other sports than soccer. We have the best baseball league in the world, the best football in the world, the best basketball in the world and the best hockey in the world. Why would we need soccer?
