It depends on the contract and what it says you can have in your apartment or house. Mostly it is just cats, dogs or birds, but there may be other pets involved. Read carefully your contract and read all the fine print too. If your contract isn't clear about what pets you have to pay a deposit, ask your new landlord or landlady about it. They should be able to assist you in this manner. Good luck!

About your lease requirements...all of the other suggestions apply. However, if the reason you have a pet is to help with a disability, you shouldn't need to supply a deposit.
Even the housing authority will back you up if you have a letter from your psychiatrist of your GP of the need of a pet for your general health.
Whatever happens good luck to you.
