You're doing the right thing by comparing the usefulness of the two. A laptop does offer portability, a desktop, more power. The basics are: What do you want to do with your computer? Same goes for the software, as it would depend upon what it's to be used to do. Most computers come with the main programs already installed and you decide how you want to use the machine. Not too familiar with all the brand names out there, but I trust Dell and they often have great specials. Good luck!

Laptops are great for portability, but desktops can be better depending on what you are using it for. Gaming systems are better as desktops because you can put more parts into them. I want a laptop. Don't buy an E-machine, they are junk. Most of the well-known brands are alright, but you are going to pay more for the name. Dell is a very good, inexpensive brand and they are customizable through the website if you know what you are doing. A good idea would be to go to a local computer store - a small business one where they build systems. Then you can customize it for what you want it to do. They can also tell you the best options for what you want to use it for.

it depends on the things you want to do with your computer and the way you want to work.
1. if you are just going to do regular stuff --- write documents, some spreadsheets, some presentations, internet, email, chat -- either will be good, but a laptop will have the advantage of portability. however, if you want a big screen to work with, you might as well get a desktop.
2. if you are going to do regular stuff mentioned above plus programs that require huge graphics power -- such as serious pc games or graphics program like photoshop -- then you're better off with a desktop that has top-of-the-line graphics and/or sound adapters.
for the brands - hp has neat features for desktops; dell has good tech support; toshiba, ibm, & hp are reliable for notebooks.
for the software -- again it depends on what you want to do with your computer.
if you provide more details on what you want to do with your computer, you'll get a better answer to your question.

It all depends on what you wanna do and how much money you want to spend. I would buy a dell personally because they are more broadly used and almost everything is compatible. They are not very different, but if you do end up getting a laptop, I would definitely install a wireless router. That way, you can be hooked up to the Internet and still have no wires. You can print and not even be connected to a printer by wires.

a desktop is usually more versatile but less mobile. it all depends on your purpose. if you travel a lot and need a computer. get a laptop.
if you want bells and whistles get a desktop.
you can get the same software. we have a sony laptop, sony desktop and dell desktop.
sony is good. Dell is ok!

laptop. They use to not have the power of desktops but that has changed. Downside is repairs. Accessing the internal parts is a pain and needs a pro to do it.
