Because in a country that is based entirely on Christianity, people seem to frown upon the idea of a man having more than one wife. Personally, I have no problem with it, but most Christians find it completely scandalous and horrendous.

Polygamy and polyandry are not socially unacceptable everywhere. There are still cultures which accept them. If you are meaning here, in the United States, the issue is based upon ignorance and religious bias.

No amount of rational or logical arguments will change the minds of those who oppose. Looking at the current marriage statistics in this country, I would tend to believe that people cannot properly love a single individual long enough to make the relationship last.

Polygamy is socially unacceptable because people in general have an ingrained idea of what marriage is. Marriage is apparently the union of two people. I don't see anything wrong with polygamy (although I would not be a participant) many people think it is like lying to yourself. Like you haven't accepted that you aren't in love with anyone. I think it is more like having so much love and finding people to share it all with. I also think that it's probably just the male instinct to procreate and pass on their genes.
Hope this opinion was informative for you.

Well, if you do the numbers, the population is pretty evenly divided. One man, one woman. If one man marries three or four women, then two or three men don't have wives. In Bountiful, BC, (Canada) one man has over 20 wives. That means 19 other men in the community have no wives. Polygamists have no useful suggestions on what these 'left over' men should do. Polygamy also limits the gene pool. If the 20 wives of that one man each had her own husband, the gene pool would be that much enriched. But as they all share the same husband, the gene pool is limited. Also, as polygamous communities tend to isolate themselves, it leads to inbreeding, and that itself can be disastrous.

My two cents worth on the subject is that it is not the best thing for the survival of the species. If one man fathers a large number of children from several women, rather than each woman having a separate husband and father for her children, then it reduces the variations in the gene pool, and thereby weakens the potential defenses to a variety of diseases and genetic ailments.

This is related to the benefit of seeking partners from outside ones own gene pool as an improvement, vs. intermarriage and inbreeding as a weakening of the gene pool.

It is not only unacceptable, it is illegal. It is known by the Mormons as 'plural marriage.' They condoned it until they were given the option of joining Statehood, or continuing this practice, so they opted for Statehood. Then the President of the Mormon Church put out an Official Declaration to the effect that it was no longer recognized in the true Mormon Church. One couple didn't abide by the OD, so the 'Marriage Hall' in Salt Lake City was burned to the ground.

chk it in our culture it is considered a privilege to hav more than one wife. From what I have seen so far though, it opresses women because they cannot do the same. Funny enough they wouldnt even if they were given a chance.
Strange how the same species with only two diffeences can have such different memntalities.

Are you talking about literal polygamy (one man, several women), or are you also talking about polyandry (one woman, several men)? Personally, I think it's due to irrational prejudice. Consenting adults should be allowed to enter into any relationship that pleases them, whether it's a traditional marriage, polyandry, or just remaining single and indulging in sex with a skilled prostitute of either sex.

We are monogamous because of the laws of nature as well as the laws of culture that govern our society. Think of wolves. Only the alpha male and alpha female reproduce. Many animals in nature are monogamous. Think of the variety of religions each proclaiming monogamy.

It just is. It's hard to handle one woman, can you imagaine being nagged by two or more at the same time?

Or are you asking about the women who are brainwashed? You know, by those cults.

from a womans viewpoint i'd have to say because its unfair. if it was allowed to be the other way around (women with multiple husbands) then i think it would be better.
For the general population though i'd have to say it because we are in a predominantly christian world and that goes against their teachings. same reason things like abortiona and gay marriage or still so controversial
