it might be slow because yahoo has a lot of member connecting to it throughout the world and it could be slowing the server down or because your isp has a lot of users logged onto it.

Its wierd but if you go do a ctrl-alt-delete you will see that yahoo seems to really hog ressources..ie at the moment mine is using 35 mb of ram memory but I have seen it in the high 100's at times...add that to any other computer activity you have going and also if you are using a router or switcher...that can have an impact as well...

This happened for me, go to Messenger, then Messenger Preferences, then Enable Firewall With No Proxies.
That Worked for me!
