"fat chance" is a sarcastic way of saying it, like "yeah there's a real big chance of that..."

Slim chance means just what it sounds like. Fat chance, on the other hand, is sarcasm. You're saying FAT when you really mean SLIM. Kind of like saying, "It felt good" instead of saying, "It hurt." If you didn't know the sarcasm was there, it would sound like those two phrases mean the same too. It's all about the sarcasm. Sarcasm can make any word mean it's opposite.

usually, you answer 'slim chance' when conversing matter-of-factly, or simply answering a question or stating a fact.

you answer or say 'fat chance' when you want to be sarcastic or when you want someone to realize that he or she is being silly or stupid.
