I am currently trying to follow a course in programming but it just doesn't make that much sense to me. I fix and maintain people's computers on the side but I would love to make a living at it and be able to support my family from its income. Any good advice out there ?

I am currently a teacher in a elem/middle/high school and teach it at the moment. I do love the challenge of troubleshooting problems and was told by some that programming was the way to go for a new career direction. However, the programming languages are stumping me but I do like the idea of graphics and such more so than the languages programming side. THANK YOU ALL so much for your prompt answers BTW!

You will need a degree or certificate to get a good job. Many 2 year colleges have a degree that is quicker to obtain and you can start working right away, Good luck.

The best advice I can give, you've already said... find something you would love to do. That's the most important first step. If you're really serious about doing it as a business, then maybe take a small business course. This will help you with the business side of things. Maybe friends can help you think of a catchy name for your business. See what the demand is for the service, check out other similar business and see what they're doing right or wrong. Anyway, good luck in whatever you choose to do.

The most of what you will do in life is customer service and people relations. You can know everything about a machine - pc (both genders), device, appliance, domain controller, firewall, NAT box, OC-48 or an entire telcom switch and its components, but if you don't know how to deal with people you will fail miserably.
The thing is, you are never going to know everything, and the best part of life is all about the ride, so the best course of action I can advise is learn how to tell people you don't know the answer but you are in the process of finding out, politely and succinctly.
Then if you don't understand a prog language, go to another one. Some are easier to learn than others for the way you think. Some of my friends say that C++ is awesome, but others think it is difficult, then others like Java. I even have a buddy that thinks assembly is the best thing out there, of course he communicates with machines much better than anyone I know.

well if you really like computers and your not getting the information you need in the class your takin i think you should go and take another class because i know i wouldn't want someone messing up my computer. But sometimes the interest is better than the skill and if you really want it there's a way. Mayebe you could start out simple like you are with fixing computers and ask around at work if anyone knows of any more jobs dealing with computers. Always check the newspaper and online. Good luck and i'm sure your great at what you do

I have been working with computers my entire career. 26 years now. There are a lot of careers that are associated with computers. You could use computers as your central theme, but you could be a technical writer that works with the programmer, you be a quality assurance analyst, you could be a manager or a project manager. If you like hands on work you could be the technician. There are many different avenues. Look at your skills and what you enjoy doing and then marrying those with a career in computers. Teaching, financial, health care, etc. Good luck!!

Don't bother. The money can be good, but you get no credit when you do your job well, and when the slightest thing goes wrong you're treated like a criminal. I've been doing this **** for a living since 2000; I know what I'm talking about.
