Gravity has been shown to be a bending of space by the presence of mass. The more mass, the more extreme is that bending. The mass of a black hole is so immense that space in effect is bent back on itself, and since light must follow the shape of that space it can not move away from a black hole.

Black holes have gravity, like the Earth, except they have LOTS of gravity. The gravity is so strong it actually pulls the light back down to the surface. Nothing can escape.

Black holes are not fully understood because we haven't had a good chance to study one. The main thing to remember is that they have a lot of gravity so almost nothing can get out. Exactly what can get out is still debatable. It's widely believed that matter and energy can't get out.

Any thing and every thing that enters a black hole is then spread apart from its original position(because of the great gravitational force on them.) That is why when any thing goes into a black hole nothing can be retrieved from it.
