That is sort of right. However, there is this big middle class 'swing' vote now that is neither labor nor the combination of 'big business + religiously conservative' that traditionally made up the Republican party.

Both parties shift to center during their election years to capture that swing vote. However, this year big business Republicans have lost enough of their base that they are trying to recapture the religious right which they can usually count on. They are doing this with the amendments to the Constitution they know won't pass but figure they will get points for having introduced.

Me, I'm registered Republican but was once a registered Democrat. This year I am voting immigration, which means the Republicans will get my vote in my state (that wouldn't necessarily be true if I lived somewhere else.) However, I find all of this focus on banning same sex marriages and banning flag burning to be repugnant to my belief in personal privacy and freedom of expression. I just don't think the Democrats are better.

I am English. I grew up under the depression that was Thatcherism, so I know what I'm talking about: There are no real differences between the parties, they are just different camps or groups of college buddies/business partners. The original Labour Party was slightly different in that they were not entirely out for profit, but those days are long gone. The Republicans and Democrats are two groups with the intention of gaining power, there's no other difference, so in that sense they ARE the analogues of the Tories and New Labour.

Nothing like Labour and Conservative. Both Republican and Democrat leaders care more for power than what is good for the normal citizen. They should change their 'wonderful' electoral system to a European system. Currently it is almost impossible for a new party - with new ideas - to make any headway in the USA.
The Democrats and Republicans take turns to ruin America, and Americans continue electing them. Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush.
Same monkey, same tribe.

Republican do what is Right 80-90% of the time. Democrats since their formation, do just the opposite. The Democrats(original name: Anti-Federalists) platform has always been "Anti". They just believe the opposite of whatever the Republicans lay out. They very rarely have an original idea. They wait for Republicans to create ideas then bash those ideas with as many negative "one-liners" as possible. When they get their way(ex. abortion) they spread fear, that every move or Judicial appt. by Republicans is an attempt to overturn it. Republicans only wish more Democrats would exercise their right to have an abortion, considering they wanted it soo badly? But how many PRO-Choicers have actually been to or even been outside an abortion clinic? Not many. The experience was quite an eye opener. The Complete opposite from the image I imagined and the one Pro-Choicers would have you believe. Most "Protesters" around abortion clinics were understanding, loving & caring folks, who offered another option, not hateful comments, not violent attacks, just "we will help you, we understand, abortion is not the only option, if you want to choose life for you child, we will support you. They offered housing, financial support, ect. I was shocked. I imagined being greated by violent religious fanatics with shotguns and 9mm. Not so. Anyway, I'm rambling.

Repuglican and democrats represent two differ ant ends of the political spectrum, I think that democrat can probably more closely compared to that labor party as they are more for the working people in this country while the repuglican are more for the elite, the favor the very rich and the large corporations and do not help the country's poor in any way and the democrats at least try to do that.

Republicans are Bible-thumping fascists. Democrats are money-grubbing socialists. Both parties are meddlesome, both have nothing but contempt for the Constitution of the US, the ideals of the founding fathers, and the concept of individual rights and private party. Quite frankly, Guy Fawkes had the right idea.

Democrats favor big government and raising taxes. They are liberal minded in their ideas. They believe the government should pay for everything and have many "gimme programs," which taxpayers end up paying for when the taxes are raised.

Republicans favor small government and cutting taxes. They are more conservative in ideas. Republicans believe in working for what you get and earning your own way. Therefore, tax cuts.

It's ambiguous because there's no membership eligibility to eiher party or anything like that. Typically, anyone who likes war is a Republican and anyone who flunked economics is a Democrat.
