dont listen to Natalie.ur not supp 2 give newborns water unless ped says to.it deprives them of calories they need.if that's what he wants...then its OK.there are guidelines but that's all they are...GUIDELINES.not every1 follows.ur newborn is how old?has it been 5 oz from day 1?it seems like a lot,but if hes a couple months old, great!they know when their full and they will stop at that time.newborns will eat every 1 to 3 hours.feed on demand.my son is 4 months old and is just now starting to drink 5 oz every 2 1/2 to 4 hours.how much does ur baby weigh?my son is 14 lbs.

Every baby drinks differently. For example my son drank four ozs every 2-3 hours but he was also small for his age since he was a month early. But now my sister-in-law would only feed her daughter 2 ozs every 4 hours like all the books said, and guess what she had a cranky child who would cry all the time. My son was happy. Her daughter also became americ as where to my son is perfectly healthy. The best thing to do is go with your gut, and if you worry ask your ped, but usually the ped will say as long as the baby is at a healthy weight and has healthy weight gain every thing is fine. And make sure you see your ped, not just a family doctor either, unless they do spealize in babies. My sister in law's doctor wasn't a ped and he gave her info that you read in books which isn't always right. Just remember you're the mom no matter what. Your decision is the one that counts.

it all depends on how old the newborn is a baby's tummy is only the size of a marble when its born and even at 5 months its only the size of the baby's fist so it just depends on the age you don't want to stretch the tummy and a baby will keep eating from a bottle there is not too much work the bottle just drips and drips so the baby eats but i would talk to the dr good luck

That's very good!! Most newborns tummys aren't big enough to hold that much. My daughter is 4 months, and is just starting to drink 5 or 6 oz in one feeding. God Bless

That's great as long as she doesn't get belly ache/colic. Is she content? That's your answer. My grandson guzzled 5-6 oz every 3-4 hours and got dreadful colic. Now he's taking 4-5 every 4 hours and things have settled down somewhat. Just give lots of burping every couple of ounces and have the gripe water close. Good luck.

My son was guzzle 6 oz every three hours the day he was born! The nurses and doctors were amazed but said there was nothing wrong with it. He was born at 10 lbs 4 oz and I'm sure that had something to do with it, but don't worry.

That sounds very normal. Most newborn babies have to drink every three hours or so and about 5 oz of formula is average.

If she is hungry let her eat if she's not then don't bother trying until she is. You don't really have to moniter how much a baby eats until they start eating fatty foods.
