Sharpen and balance the blade. Check belts for wear and replace as needed if applicable. Change the oil and clean the oil filter. Drain the old gas and check the fuel filter before refilling. Pull the spark plug, clean and regap if necessary, or replace. Lubricate moving parts like wheel bearings/bushings, etc.. Clean the air filter. Before putting the air filter back on, start the mower, run up the rpm's, and spray some carburator cleaner in the carburator. This will remove any schellac buildup as well as help clean the fine parts inside. Put it all back together and you should be ready to go.

Good luck this mowing season.

Use a HD-30 weight of any GOOD name brand oil (20 ounces max! it holds) above 40 degrees F
Use 5w-30 conventional below 40 F
OR use 5w-30 or 10w-30 synthetic oil all year round.

4.5hp? If it has a paper air filter, replace it.....don't clean it.
Probablly has a foam filter, Replace either once a year, but clean the foam filter with soap and water (wrench it out GOOD!) and let it dry a day or so, and lightly oil and sqeeze it out.
Don't oil the foam pre filter for a paper filter.

There should be a plug on the bottom of the mower, near the crank where a open ratchet (without the socket) will fit to remove it. I lift mine up on blocks and drain it out from there till it drains no more. (advance or autozone take used oil) and fill it up (20 ounces now) and check and make sure its to the full mark. Check the oil regularly and change it every 25 hours of engine operation. Any engine work...... take the plug wire off or better yet the plug out.
Clean the plug once a year and gap it (.30) and replace it when it gets hard to start. Remember to use a fuel stabilizer! if keeping the gas over a month. Before you put it in storage, fill it full of stabilized gas, cover the cap with tin foil and change the oil.... don't want that old oil setting in there....

If you don't have the plug to drain from the bottom, you can flip it on its side (run it out of gas first) and drain it out the dipstick/filler.

You might also check the spark plug condition and sharpen the blade if it needs it. Other than that, there's not much to it.
